Chai tea is something I really love thanks to my never ending adoration for everything spicy, so I was excited to try out the pack of Fumari Spiced Chai that I recently acquired. I hoped for a sweet, spicy blend of cinnamon, clove and everything else that a good chai should contain.
Nope.
This tobacco does not remind me of chai at all. Right from the start the smell in the package was overly sweet and candied with notes of artificial caramel and marshmallow. It smelled good, but it did not bode well for the flavor that was to come. The cut was that which is typical of Fumari; medium to small pieces of tobacco coated in gobs of juice with the color of light honey.
The flavor is pretty much in line with the scent. There is no real spice flavor to speak of and the only hints that do exist are so hidden under the most prominent flavors that they may as well not even be there. More than anything this tobacco tastes like a caramel and butterscotch candy. It’s very sweet and has a wonderful room-note, but nothing like chai.
If you’re looking for a butterscotch flavor, this is actually pretty tasty. It’s a creamy and sweet caramel/butterscotch flavor that I think you’ll enjoy. Anyone looking for a chai flavor will likely be left disappointed. This one was so far off the mark that I wonder if I got a bad batch. It’s a good tobacco and it’s not harsh, unpleasant or in any way rotten, but it almost seems like they forgot to add a lot of the flavoring components.
So, what do you think of this tobacco? Am I completely off base? Did I get a bad batch? Are my taste buds completely shot?
